What is RCT and When is it needed?

Root canals are very small, thin divisions that branch off from the top pulp chamber down to the tip of the root. A tooth has at least one but no more than four root canals.When the tissues inside root canal becomes infected due to a deep cavity or fracture that allows bacteria to seep in, or injury due to trauma, it can die. Damaged or dead tissues causes increased blood flow and pressure which cannot be relieved from inside the tooth causing severe pain and sensitivity to hot and cold.To relieve this, root canal treatment is required which includes removal ofthe unhealthy nerve and medication of the tooth to treat the infection (bacterial abscess). After the infection is treated and removed, a filling is placed in the roots to seal it where the unhealthy nerve was located.

What Is Surgical Root Canal Treatment (SRCT)?

Surgical root canal treatment is a procedural effort in which it is necessary to elevate a small flap of tissue adjacent to the involved tooth in order to gain access to and treat root canal disease. Surgical root canal treatments are usually minor, in-office procedures performed under local anaesthesia. Once the pathological area is exposed, the doctor performs a "curettage" to remove the diseased tissue from around the root. This is usually followed by an "apicoectomy," a procedure in which the diseased portion of the root is removed.

Is my tooth different after root canal?

Yes. Since the damaged nerve was removed and the tooth experienced infection, the tooth is now more brittle than before. So, it is necessary to get it crowned to preserve it. Once the crown is placed, brushing and flossing daily and keeping up with regular preventative care through your semi-annual cleanings and annual examinations with our office is helpful.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal Disease, also known as Pyorrhea is an infection of the gums and bone that hold your teeth in place. It begins with bacterial growth in your mouth and if left untreated, it causes loss of the bone supporting your teeth and subsequent loss of the teeth.

It is a known fact that any chronic infection in your mouth (which is what Periodontal Disease is) allows the bacteria to enter your blood stream. These bacteria may cause blood clots and block your arteries, possibly even triggering a heart attack.

Other studies have shown that plaque bacteria entering the bloodstream through infected gums may also cause a potentially fatal heart disease called infective endocarditis. This is a bacterial infection which causes the sac around the heart to become inflamed.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth -- to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. • There is a large section of tooth decay, so that a filling will not suffice.

METAL Crown: These include gold, stainless steel , or a base-metal alloy ( nickel or chromium).

These crowns have a metal base and a porcelain coating on them
